WHAT IS ACNE?
Acne is a common skin condition that occurs when hair follicles become clogged with oil and dead skin cells. This can result in the formation of pimples, blackheads, whiteheads, and other blemishes. Acne typically appears on the face, neck, chest, back, and shoulders, and it can range from mild to severe. Acne develops because of pores clogged with sebum, dead skin cells, and bacteria. It’s the result of a complicated interaction between hormones and bacterial buildup, which can lead to inflammation.
WHAT CAUSES ACNE?
Acne can be caused by various factors. At SkinQ , we understand the importance of addressing the underlying causes of acne to provide effective treatment and long-lasting results.
Some factors that can contribute to acne breakouts:
Hormonal changes, particularly during adolescence, can trigger acne. Increased levels of androgens can stimulate the sebaceous glands to produce excess oil, leading to clogged pores and the development of acne.
Excessive sweating, coupled with friction from tight clothing or sports equipment, can create a favorable environment for acne-causing bacteria to thrive. This can lead to inflammation and the formation of acne lesions, especially on areas such as your face, back, and chest.
Stress can worsen existing acne or trigger breakouts. Stress hormones can stimulate the sebaceous glands and contribute to increased oil production, leading to clogged pores and the formation of acne.
It’s no secret that different types of food have different short- and long-term effects on the human body. Certain foods can cause a spike in one’s blood sugar levels, namely high-glycemic foods. This rapid increase in blood sugar often leads to inflammation while simultaneously boosting sebum production, resulting in a one-two punch that might trigger acne or make an outbreak more aggressive.
Advanced Exfoliation Treatment (Chemical Peels)
Chemical peels involve the application of a chemical solution to the skin, which exfoliates the outer layer and promotes the growth of new, healthier skin cells. Chemical peels can effectively reduce acne breakouts, minimize acne scars, and improve overall skin texture and tone.

LED Light Therapy
LED light therapy for acne is a tremendous treatment option for acne. LED light therapy works by killing acne-causing bacteria at the source, deep beneath the skin’s surface. Blue LED light, especially in combination with red light therapy, emits specific, clinically-proven wavelengths of light to trigger an all-natural effect in human tissue, killing acne-causing bacteria, decreasing inflammation, and improving skin tone, texture, and clarity from the inside out.

What's the difference between the 3 bikini wax options?Basic Bikini Wax - Quick, easy, and basic! A good option if you want a natural look. The basic bikini wax removes hair from outside the bikini line (about 3 fingers width) and a little off the top (two fingers width). Modified Brazilian (aka French bikini) - This option removes more hair than the Basic Bikini Wax, but less than the Brazilian Wax. The bikini line is further in without any hair removed from the labia. Everything else goes, and taking off the backside is optional. Brazilian Wax - "No hair, don’t care!" The Brazilian Wax removes all of the hair, everywhere. Front, back, sides, and top ... unless you prefer to leave a landing strip or triangle at the top. *** If you’re still not sure what wax to book, please call us. Since service times vary for the different bikini waxing options, it's important that you book the service that most accurately describes your preferences, so that we have ample time to comfortably complete your service. That being said, we'll always do our best to accomodate last-minute requests, but that may not always be possible depending on the schedule.
How should I prepare for my bikini/Brazilian wax appointment?Prep the skin by exfoliating in between appointments. Use a gentle loofah, scrub, or chemical exfoliant - like salicylic acid. Exfoliating helps to slough off the dead skin cells, unclog the pores, and will help ensure effective removal. Note: Make sure to not exfoliate the day before and the same day of your appointment. The best time for exfoliation is 48 hours after waxing, and up until 2 days before your next appointment. Shaving in between appointments is a big NO. Shaving strengthens the hair follicle which causes the hair to become more coarse and dense over time, resulting in a more painful waxing experience. It also throws the hair growth cycle out of whack, meaning when you do get waxed, not all of the hair will necessarily come out because it won’t all be the same length.
This is my first bikini/Brazilian waxing experience and I’m nervous - what can I expect? We completely understand why you would feel a little uneasy - but remember, we are trained professionals and this is what we do for a living. We like to say, “We don’t even see naked anymore.” Totally true. If you’re worried about the pain, remember that consistency is the key for a less painful waxing experience. It will take about 3 waxings, spaced every 4-6 weeks, to fully enjoy the benefits of waxing. For example, the first wax might hurt a bit, but the second is way easier, and with each waxing it will become more comfortable and the results will last longer - as long as you’re consistent and not shaving between appointments.
How long does your hair have to be for waxing?¼” which is the size of a grain of rice.
Should I trim before my waxing appointment?Nope.
Does your hair grow back less and/or thinner from waxing?Yes-ish...but it doesn’t happen overnight and you have to be very consistent with your waxing. Meaning, your hair growth will likely not slow down if you only get waxed once or twice a year. With that said, this doesn’t happen for everyone, but it will happen for a lot of people if they are diligent.
How often should I get waxed? We typically recommend every 4-6 weeks. Sort of like a haircut.
Is it ok to get waxed if I’ve been in the sun or tanning bed?No. If you’ve been in the sun within 5 days of your waxing appointment, then you need to reschedule. Tanning/burning increases the risk of your skin lifting during waxing, and we certainly don't want that to happen.
How far in advance should I stop using retinol before facial waxing? At least 4 days prior to your appointment.
What are some of the things that I need to avoid after being waxed?24-48 hours after your appointment avoid: extreme temperatures - hot water, saunas, friction, sweating, tight clothing, and sun exposure/tanning.
I’ve had my eyebrows waxed before and skin came off. Why?Unfortunately, sometimes this happens. It could be from a number of reasons: Are you using any type of topical exfoliants such as retinol, alpha hydroxy acids (AHAs), beta hydroxy acids (BHAs), etc.? Have you been in the sun?
Do you provide facial waxing for men? This is a tricky question! Yes, we certainly wax men's brows, nostrils, and ears. However, we do not perform men's facial waxing on the moustache, beard, chin, jawline, or neck. This is due to the highly increased risk of developing uncomfortable and painful ingrown hairs, since the hair follicles in those areas grow hair that is definitively more coarse and texturized as compared to women.
Do you offer "below-the-belt" waxing for men? Thanks for asking! Unfortunately, our staff are not trained or practiced on waxing for this specific body area (includes men's bikini or Brazilian, booty cheeks, or anything in between). We don’t want to risk your safety or cause an injury by mistake because of this. However, we are more than happy to refer you to some other businesses close to our Andersonville studio.
